The Tunkhannock Youth
Wrestling Club took the Penn League by storm on Sunday 2/7/2010. This was the day that the 18 teams from the Penn League sent
their best wrestlers to Crestwood High School to compete in the League Champions Tournament. The Tigers were ready to rumble.
16 wrestlers climbed up on Mountain Top and 11 came away with hardware.
Starting things off for
Tunkhannock was 6 year old Owen Woods, who not only collected his 1st Championship in his young career, but was
also was recognized as the most outstanding Pee-Wee wrestler. Woods had 3 pins on the day and 1 tech fall. He only surrendered
1 point in the entire tournament. David Gavek followed this up with his 3rd Penn League title. Gavek had 2 hard
victories by scores of 4-0 & 6-2. Tommy Traver collected his 2nd title with 3 impressive victories. Traver
came in as the 3rd seeded wrestler in the bracket and beat the #2 & #1 seeds on his way to 1st.
Bryce Brown earned his very first title in the Midget Unlimited class with a 8-1 victory. Closing it out for the little Tigers
and earning his 2nd Championship was Dalton Ray. Ray was 2-0 in the tournament, winning by fall in both bouts.
As Ray closes out his Penn League career and an undefeated season, he was the recipient of The Bill Purcell Outstanding 6th
Grader Award.
Also battling hard for the Tigers while earning runner-up honors are; Lucas Stage
in the Midget 83 lb class, Tyler Pugh at Midget 130, Tommy Bachman at Junior 66 lbs, Jake Richards – Junior 82 lbs,
and Breanna Wiedner wrestling in her first season with the TYWC. Earning a bronze medal in an extremely tough bracket was
Brian Rosiak in the Midget 62 lb class.
Also making the trip to Crestwood and giving it their all
were; Connor Munley, Elliott Hammersley, Jacob Hand, Joey Gavek, and Dakota Quick. All wrestlers showed great toughness and
a willingness to improve their wrestling skills.
Next up for TYWC is the annual Tony Stanton Memorial
Wrestling Tournament at Tunkhannock High school on Valentines Day, 2/14/2010. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m.
