TYWC Fired Up

The Tunkhannock Youth Wrestling Club went on the road to West Scranton High School on Sunday to go up against two very tough Penn League opponents and came home with a victory and a loss.

The youth grapplers first took on unbeaten Hazelton.  It will probably go down as one of the best Penn League matches this year as Hazelton came from behind to pull out a 42-37 victory.  It was a back-and-forth battle all the way down to the wire.  Owen Woods pinned his opponent to get things started, then the Tigers picked up wins from Nathan Wilmarth, David Gavek, Brian Rosiak, Tommy Traver, Connor Munley, Jake Richards, Ellioit Hammersley, Jacob Hand, and Dalton Ray.  Other varsity members giving it all they had were Hunter Gregory, BJ Works, Tommy Bachman, Nick Wilmarth, Joey Gavek, Dakota Quick, Tyler Pugh, and Bryce Brown.  The excitement of this team match nearly brought down the house in West Scranton and this is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of these young wrestlers giving it their all.

In the second match-up of the day, the youth grapplers took on another talented Penn League club in Crestwood.  This time, the Tigers finished strong and came home with a 45-37 victory.  Four youth Tigers picked up pins on the way to victory, including Woods once again, Traver, Hammersley, and Quick.  Other winners in the match were David Gavek, Nick Wilmarth, Richards, Ray, and Brown.  BJ Works lost a tough 6-4 decision in overtime.

The TYWC future varsity wrestlers also got some more mat-time to sharpen their newly acquired skills.  Picking up pins for the future varsity was Jacob Davenport, Ted Nafus, Chris Franko, Will Dudock, and Justin Kozlansky.

In other weekend wrestling action, TYWC took 11 grapplers to a round robin tournament at Northeast Bradford High School on Saturday.  The team dominated the competition in the tournament, claiming seven first place finishers, one second place, one third, and two fourth place finishers.  Coming home with championship trophies were Owen Woods, Brian Rosiak, Tommy Traver, Connor Munley, Dakota Quick, Dalton Ray, and David Gavek.  Quick collected four pins on his way to first place.  Joey Gavek took second, Kurtis Christ took third, and Hunter Gregory and Brian Christ fought hard to bring home fourth place finishes.  The team was dominant enough to bring home the second place overall-team award, finishing just one point behind first place Towanda.

Rounding out the weekend action was Elliot Hammesley, who traveled to Deposit, New York for some tough competition and good mat experience.

The TYWC is now 7-2 on the season in Penn League action and will take to the mats next Sunday at the Tunkhannock Middle School.  Wrestling begins at 12 noon.
