The 4th annual Tony
Stanton Memorial Youth Wrestling Tournament was held on Sunday 2/8/2009. This tournament is known for bringing in great competition
from Philadelphia, New York, New Jersey, as well as the local wrestling faithful. This year did not disappoint as nearly 300
wrestlers with their families filled the gym at Tunkhannock Area High School. The TYWC was well represented as nearly the
entire squad tied up their wrestling shoes and strapped on their headgear ready for some competition.
Lucas Stage & Tommy Traver were crowned champions for their efforts. Traver collected 3 pins while Stage pinned
2, and won the championship by a dominating 11-0 score. Connor Munley, Brian Rosiak, Shane Sherwood, Nathan Wilmarth, and
Owen Woods came 1 match short of the crown, finishing in a respective 2nd place. David Gavek, Elliott Hammersley,
Jacob Hand, Dakota Quick, and Jake Richards walked away with 3rd place trophies. Brian Christ, Gavin D’Amato,
Justin Stonier, Michael Walsh, and Ryan Fink were awarded 4th place medals for their hard efforts. Rounding out
the line-up for the junior Tigers are: Josh Beeman, Pat Casey, Kurtis Christ, Ryan DeRemer, Dustin Dippre, Chris Franko, Nick
Kalmanowicz, Justin Kozlansky, Erin Maloney, Dalton Ray, Ziggy Rezykowski, Alex Smith, Kyle VonOhlen, Erik Works, and William
Works.
The Tony Stanton memorial pinning award is given to the wrestler who collects the most pins in the least amount of
time. For the 1st time in the history of the tournament a Tunkhannock wrestler earned this honor. Jake Richards
pinned 3 of his opponents in a combined time of 2 minutes & 19 seconds. The coaching staff
of the TYWC wants to congratulate all of these wrestlers for all their hard work and efforts over the course of the season.
Every wrestler that stepped out on the mat is a champion in their coaches’ eyes.
